5 Tips for Dealing with Physical Illness

Dealing with physical illnesses that cripple you is a challenge that no one can truly come up with a formula for. But there are things you can do to help alleviate some of your pain and discomfort and make your life easier. These five tips have helped me throughout this past year as I battle lupus, Grave's, and epilepsy.

  1. Get moving, outside the house preferrably. The more active you are, the less you'll hurt eventually. Movement is good for the joints and muscles. Being outside is good for your mood and esteem. If the doctor has not recommended bedrest, then I recommend exercise.
  2. Find something to laugh at. Laughter is like a strong dose of pain medication and it releases chemicals that battle depression.
  3. Nurture your friendships. Do not, and I repeat DO NOT, become a loner. You need companionship to keep you grounded and help you not fall into a pity party.
  4. Watch what you eat. Learn about the benefits of various foods and eat what you need. Get a vitamin that provides the essentials and figure out if you need any extra nutrients or supplements.
  5. Pray and meditate. Quiet time with God is probably the single most important thing anyone can do, but especially those who are sick or hurting.
